Adavale (QLD)

Adavale is a small and remote settlement in Queensland’s Channel Country, approximately 98 kilometres north of Quilpie. Surrounded by open plains, mulga country, seasonal waterways and extensive pastoral properties, the town provides visitors with an authentic experience of life in one of Australia’s least densely populated inland regions.

Established during the expansion of pastoral settlement across western Queensland, Adavale grew as a service centre for surrounding cattle and sheep stations. The town once supported hotels, stores, government services and transport connections, but its development declined after the railway was routed through Quilpie instead. Remnants of its former buildings and community infrastructure continue to tell the story of this earlier period.

Adavale lies within the broader Lake Eyre Basin and is connected to the upper Cooper Creek catchment. Waterholes, channels and floodplains are defining features of the surrounding landscape. During wet periods these systems spread water across the normally dry country, supporting wildlife, vegetation and pastoral activity throughout the region.

The settlement is also recognised as the principal gateway to Hell Hole Gorge National Park, where rugged gorges, permanent waterholes and remote walking country contrast with the surrounding plains. Within Adavale, museums, historic relics, local businesses and the town’s interpretive features provide insight into more than a century of outback community life.
