Adelaide (SA)

Adelaide is South Australia’s capital and the cultural, commercial and transport centre of the state. The city sits on Kaurna Country between the Mount Lofty Ranges and Gulf St Vincent, with the River Torrens / Karrawirra Parri passing through a broad band of parklands that separates the central business district from North Adelaide.

Colonel William Light’s planned city is recognised for its grid of streets, five central squares and surrounding green belt. This layout makes many of Adelaide’s civic buildings, museums, galleries, theatres, markets and dining precincts easy to explore, while the city’s laneways and heritage arcades reveal a more intimate side of the capital.

North Terrace forms Adelaide’s principal cultural boulevard. Parliament House, Government House, the State Library, South Australian Museum, Art Gallery of South Australia, university buildings and gardens sit within a compact precinct, while the nearby riverbank brings together Adelaide Oval, the Festival Centre, convention facilities and Elder Park.

Adelaide’s identity extends well beyond the city centre. Glenelg, Brighton, Henley Beach, West Beach, Semaphore and Port Noarlunga connect the metropolitan area with Gulf St Vincent, offering jetties, beaches, coastal paths and seaside precincts. Port Adelaide adds a working-port landscape and an exceptional concentration of maritime, railway, aviation and military heritage.

To the east, the suburbs rise toward the Mount Lofty Ranges through established neighbourhoods, conservation parks, gardens and historic estates. Morialta, Belair, Waite, Carrick Hill and Penfolds Magill Estate show how quickly Adelaide’s urban landscape gives way to bushland, foothill views and productive land.

The southern metropolitan area follows the coast and Onkaparinga River toward Hallett Cove, Port Noarlunga and Old Noarlunga. Here, geological formations, Kaurna cultural interpretation, estuarine habitat and historic township character add further depth to the story of metropolitan Adelaide.

ShowcasingOz TV will document Adelaide as a connected collection of city, coast, port, parklands and suburbs. Our coverage will focus on the people, small businesses, cultural institutions, visitor experiences and distinctive places that make the wider metropolitan area an essential starting point for exploring South Australia.
