American River on Kangaroo Island in South Australia

American River (SA)

American River is a peaceful coastal township on the western shore of Eastern Cove on Kangaroo Island. Known locally as “The River”, the community overlooks sheltered water and the entrance to Pelican Lagoon, creating a setting recognised for birdlife, boating, fishing, seafood and a relaxed maritime character.

The area lies within the traditional Country of the Ngarrindjeri and Kaurna-related peoples associated with Kangaroo Island and the adjacent mainland. Its waterways, coastal vegetation and marine habitats form part of a much longer cultural and environmental story than the township itself.

The name American River dates to 1803, when a party of American sealers working from the brig Union stayed in the inlet and built the schooner Independence. The vessel is widely recognised as the first ship constructed in South Australia. This maritime history remains an important part of the town’s identity and is interpreted through the community-led Rebuild Independence Project.

Today, the town’s jetty, wharf and waterfront precinct remain closely connected with recreational fishing, aquaculture and local seafood. Nearby Pelican Lagoon Marine Sanctuary protects a complex tidal environment of islands, seagrass beds and sheltered channels that support abundant birdlife and marine species.

American River is positioned between Penneshaw and Kingscote, making it a useful base for exploring eastern and central Kangaroo Island. Coastal walking trails, maritime heritage, farm-gate produce and nearby locations including Prospect Hill, Pennington Bay and Red Banks give visitors several ways to experience the district. ShowcasingOz TV will add original photography and professionally produced video gathered during its visit to the town and surrounding region.
