Andamooka is a distinctive opal-mining town in outback South Australia, located approximately 30 kilometres east of Roxby Downs and about 600 kilometres north of Adelaide. Opal was discovered in the district in 1930, leading miners to establish camps across what became the Andamooka Precious Stones Field. The town developed gradually rather than according to a formal town plan. Several of Andamooka’s early semi-dugout cottages remain within the heritage-listed historic precinct. These modest buildings demonstrate how miners adapted to extreme summer heat and cold desert nights by building into hillsides and using thick earth and stone walls for insulation. Historic mining machinery displayed around the town provides another reminder of the ingenuity required to work remote opal fields.
Andamooka opal is particularly recognised for its matrix material, in which precious colour occurs within the surrounding host rock. The fields have also produced opalised marine fossils dating from the Early Cretaceous period, when the region lay beneath the ancient Eromanga Sea. This geological history gives the district significance beyond its mining heritage.
