Balranald is a historic riverside town in south-western New South Wales, positioned where the Sturt Highway crosses the Murrumbidgee River. Located between Hay and Mildura, the town is an important service centre for surrounding pastoral properties, agricultural enterprises, national parks and travellers crossing the state’s western plains.
The district forms part of the traditional Country of Aboriginal communities whose continuing cultural connections extend across the rivers, wetlands and ancient Willandra Lakes landscape. The surrounding waterways have supported people, wildlife and trade for thousands of years and remain central to the region’s identity.
European explorers including John Oxley, Charles Sturt and Thomas Mitchell travelled through the wider district during the nineteenth century. Balranald was gazetted in 1851 and developed as a river crossing, stock route and commercial centre serving pastoral stations along the lower Murrumbidgee.
The town also has connections with the Burke and Wills expedition, which passed through Balranald in September 1860 while travelling north. The expedition collected supplies in the district before continuing towards the interior.
Balranald’s position beside the Murrumbidgee gives the town a strong relationship with river red gum forests, floodplain wetlands and native birdlife. Riverside walking tracks and the Swing Bridge provide accessible ways to experience this environment close to the centre of town.
Nearby Yanga National Park protects extensive wetlands, river country and important Aboriginal and pastoral heritage. Its major visitor sites include Yanga Homestead, Yanga Woolshed, Yanga Lake and Regatta Beach. Balranald also serves as a southern gateway to the World Heritage-listed Willandra Lakes Region and Mungo National Park, although Mungo is a substantial drive from the township.

A self-guided route connecting significant buildings and historical locations throughout the town. The trail introduces visitors to Balranald’s development as a river crossing, pastoral service centre and stopping point for inland explorers.
A short nature trail through remnant black box, river red gum and lignum habitat on the Balranald Common. The trail provides opportunities to observe woodland and wetland bird species close to town.
The pedestrian Swing Bridge crosses the Murrumbidgee River from Court Street and connects with riverside walking and cycling tracks. The surrounding river red gum corridor supports native birds and wildlife.
Located beside Yanga Lake in Yanga National Park, Regatta Beach provides a scenic setting for picnics, birdwatching, paddling, fishing and boating when water levels and park conditions permit.
An elevated observation point overlooking Yanga Lake and its surrounding wetlands. The deck offers broad views towards Pelican Point and Regatta Beach and is particularly valuable for birdwatching when the lake holds water.
