Birdwood Town Centre
A compact heritage township with local businesses, historic buildings and the National Motor Museum at the centre of its visitor appeal.
Birdwood is a historic country town in the northern Adelaide Hills, approximately 44 kilometres from central Adelaide. Surrounded by rolling farmland, vineyards, wooded hills and small rural communities, the town occupies an important position along the Adelaide–Mannum Road and provides a convenient base for exploring destinations including Gumeracha, Mount Torrens, Lobethal, Charleston, Cudlee Creek and Mount Pleasant.
Originally established as Blumberg in the nineteenth century, the town developed following settlement by German-speaking migrants seeking land in the Adelaide Hills. Agriculture, grain production and local milling played important roles in its early growth. During the First World War, Blumberg was renamed Birdwood in honour of General Sir William Birdwood, who commanded Australian and New Zealand forces during the Gallipoli campaign.
Birdwood is now best known as the home of the National Motor Museum, which occupies the historic former mill complex on the town’s main street. Its collection explores the development of Australian motoring through cars, motorcycles, commercial vehicles and motoring memorabilia. The town is also closely associated with the Bay to Birdwood, the celebrated historic motoring event that travels through Adelaide and the Adelaide Hills before finishing in Birdwood.
Beyond its motoring heritage, Birdwood offers visitors a relaxed country-town atmosphere with heritage buildings, local businesses and scenic drives through the surrounding hills. Nearby attractions include wildlife experiences, gardens, museums, breweries, bushland reserves and historic townships, making Birdwood a practical starting point for exploring the northern Adelaide Hills.
ShowcasingOz TV will document Birdwood’s history, motoring identity, surrounding communities and visitor experiences as part of its national filming journey.
