Barwon Bridge
A historic lift-span bridge across the Barwon River that reflects Brewarrina’s former role as an inland river port. The movable span allowed riverboats to pass when commercial river traffic operated through the district.
Brewarrina is an outback town situated on the banks of the Barwon River in north-western New South Wales. Located approximately 96 kilometres east of Bourke, the town serves as an important centre for surrounding communities, pastoral properties and travellers following the Kamilaroi Highway and Darling River Run.
Known locally as “Bre”, Brewarrina is a place of exceptional Aboriginal cultural significance. The town and surrounding river country are connected with the Ngemba, Murrawarri, Euahlayi, Weilwan, Ualarai and Baranbinja peoples, whose cultural, spiritual and political connections with Country have continued across thousands of generations.
At the heart of Brewarrina is Baiame’s Ngunnhu, the National Heritage-listed Aboriginal fish traps. The extensive system of stone weirs and holding ponds stretches along the Barwon River and demonstrates sophisticated knowledge of river flows, fish behaviour, engineering and sustainable food gathering.
The fish traps also served as an important intertribal meeting place. Aboriginal nations travelled to the area for ceremonies, trade, cultural exchange and the seasonal harvesting of fish. The site remains a living cultural place rather than simply an archaeological feature.
Brewarrina later developed as a river port and service centre during the expansion of pastoral activity and European settlement. Riverboats, historic buildings, the Barwon Bridge and the town’s museums preserve parts of this more recent history.
Visitors can explore the Brewarrina Aboriginal Cultural Museum, join a guided tour of Baiame’s Ngunnhu, follow the River Walk, visit the sacred Ochre Beds and learn about both Aboriginal and settler history throughout the town.
Brewarrina also offers fishing, birdwatching and quiet riverside environments. Travellers heading beyond town should prepare for long distances, changing road conditions, limited services and high temperatures during warmer months.
Brewarrina’s attractions share the town’s living Aboriginal culture, riverside environment, community history, local creativity and enduring connection to Country.
