Cape Jervis is a coastal community positioned at the southwestern tip of South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula, approximately 100 kilometres south of Adelaide. Looking across Backstairs Passage towards Kangaroo Island, the town occupies one of the state’s most important and visually striking coastal locations.
The town is best known as the mainland departure point for vehicle and passenger ferries travelling to Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island. The regular ferry connection makes Cape Jervis an important transport gateway, while the harbour, terminal and surrounding businesses support travellers, local residents, fishing activity and regional tourism.
Cape Jervis is also the western starting point of the Wild South Coast Way on the Heysen Trail. From here, walkers can follow the rugged southern coastline through Deep Creek National Park towards Victor Harbor, encountering beaches, protected coves, waterfalls, native bushland and elevated views across the Southern Ocean.
The surrounding district contains a varied collection of coastal and historical destinations. Rapid Bay is known for its beach, towering cliffs and long jetty, while Talisker Mine preserves evidence of the region’s nineteenth-century mining activity. Inland locations such as Delamere and Ingalalla Falls reveal another side of the southern Fleurieu’s rural landscape.
The coastline around Cape Jervis can be steep, exposed and challenging. Several beaches and lookouts require travel along unsealed roads or walking trails, and conditions may change following rain, strong winds or high seas. Visitors should check current park and road information, carry sufficient water and remain within marked public-access areas.
ShowcasingOz TV will capture Cape Jervis and its surrounding destinations as part of our national filming journey, highlighting the town’s role as the gateway to Kangaroo Island and the natural, historical and community experiences found across the southern Fleurieu Peninsula.
