Charleville is a major regional centre in south-western Queensland, positioned beside the Warrego River and surrounded by the open landscapes of the Mulga Lands. The town provides commercial, health, education, transport and community services across an immense area of Outback Queensland.
The town developed during the nineteenth century as pastoral activity expanded across western Queensland. Sheep stations, cattle properties, wool production and regional trade became central to Charleville’s growth, while its position on important road, rail and stock routes strengthened its role as a service centre.
Charleville’s railway connection reinforced its importance as a transport hub and helped connect remote communities with eastern Queensland. Aviation later became another defining part of the town’s story, particularly through early Qantas operations, the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the establishment of a major United States Army Air Forces base during the Second World War.
Today, Charleville is known nationally for its combination of astronomy, wildlife conservation, aviation history and outback heritage. The clear inland skies support observatory and planetarium experiences, while the Charleville Bilby Experience promotes awareness of one of Australia’s most threatened native animals.
Historic buildings, museums and visitor experiences tell stories of pastoral settlement, communications, medicine, aviation and everyday life in remote Queensland. Hotel Corones remains one of the town’s most recognisable buildings and reflects the confidence and ambition that accompanied Charleville’s growth during the early twentieth century.

Located approximately 30 kilometres southwest of Charleville, this memorial and interpretive site marks the location of the September 2014 road-train explosion that destroyed the former bridge. It also recognises the courage of the emergency personnel who responded to the incident.
Painted by artist Guido van Helten, this large monochromatic mural features children from the Charleville community. The water tower forms part of the Australian Silo Art Trail and has become one of the town’s most recognisable public artworks.
