Curtin Springs is a remote working cattle station, Wayside Inn and visitor stop on the Lasseter Highway in Central Australia. Located approximately 85 kilometres east of Uluru, it provides accommodation, meals, fuel and essential services for travellers exploring the landscapes of the Red Centre.
The station has been home to the Severin family since 1956, when Peter and Dawn Severin arrived with their young son and approximately 1,500 head of cattle. The family developed Curtin Springs in an isolated environment where transport, water, communications and everyday supplies presented significant practical challenges.
Curtin Springs continues to operate as a large pastoral property while also supporting tourism and long-distance travel. Its combination of cattle production, accommodation, hospitality, fuel services and guided experiences demonstrates how remote outback enterprises often perform several important roles at once.
The property is surrounded by red-earth plains, native grasslands, salt lakes and distant ranges. Mount Conner, known as Atila to the local Aboriginal people, is one of the area’s most prominent geological features. Its broad, flat summit is often mistaken for Uluru by travellers approaching the region for the first time.
Curtin Springs also produces handmade paper using native grasses collected from the station. Guided tours explain the process of transforming local plant material into individual sheets of paper, jewellery and artwork, connecting the station’s creative work with the colours and textures of the surrounding landscape.
