Daly Waters is a small but historically significant outback locality in the Northern Territory, situated near the junction of the Stuart and Carpentaria highways. Located between Tennant Creek and Katherine, it has long served as an important stopping point for people travelling through Australia’s remote north.
The locality forms part of the traditional country of the Jingili people, whose cultural connections with the land, water sources and surrounding landscape extend across generations. The presence of reliable water made the area an important meeting place long before the development of the modern highway settlement.
Daly Waters became closely associated with the Overland Telegraph Line during the nineteenth century. The telegraph connected Australia with international communications networks and dramatically reduced the time required for news and information to travel between the continent and the rest of the world.
The former telegraph station and associated heritage sites recall the people who worked in extremely isolated conditions to maintain this vital communications link. The settlement’s position along the north-south corridor later reinforced its importance to travellers, transport operators and remote communities.
Daly Waters also occupies an important place in Australian aviation history. Its airfield became a refuelling and service point for early long-distance flights and was later used for military operations during the Second World War. The historic aviation complex and surviving hangar help preserve this pioneering period of Australian air travel.
Today, the Daly Waters Pub is the locality’s best-known attraction. Its historic building, outback hospitality and unusual collection of memorabilia contributed by visitors have made it one of the most recognisable pubs along the Stuart Highway.
The surrounding landscape is characterised by open savannah, native bushland, seasonal waterways and the expansive skies of the Northern Territory interior.
