Eromanga (QLD)
Eromanga is a small but nationally significant outback community in the Quilpie Shire of south-west Queensland. Located deep within the Channel Country, it is widely recognised as Queensland’s most westerly town. Its remote position, sweeping horizons and distinctive red-earth landscapes give visitors an immediate sense of the scale and isolation of inland Australia.
The town developed during the late nineteenth century as pastoral settlement expanded across the region. Cattle and sheep stations, transport routes and essential outback services all played an important role in Eromanga’s growth. Pastoral activity remains part of the wider district’s identity, while tourism, scientific research and local enterprise now contribute to the town’s economy.
Eromanga also sits within the enormous Eromanga Basin, a geological formation extending beneath a large section of inland Australia. The basin has supported petroleum exploration and production, adding another important chapter to the town’s economic and industrial history.
Today, Eromanga is best known internationally for its remarkable fossil discoveries. The surrounding countryside has produced dinosaur, megafauna, plant and marine fossils of major scientific importance. These discoveries include Australotitan cooperensis, commonly known as Cooper, one of the largest dinosaurs ever identified in Australia.
The Eromanga Natural History Museum preserves and studies this material while giving visitors an opportunity to see fossil preparation, scientific research and significant specimens at close range. Together with the Eromanga Living History Centre, the museum connects the ancient natural history of the region with the pastoral, industrial and social history of the modern community.
Although its population is small, Eromanga provides an important welcome and stopping point for travellers exploring the Channel Country.
