Euston (NSW)
Euston is a small Murray River town in far south-western New South Wales, within Balranald Shire. Located directly across the river from Robinvale in Victoria, Euston forms part of a closely connected cross-border community while retaining its own history, businesses and identity on the New South Wales side of the Murray.
The district has long been connected to the river and the pastoral properties that developed across the surrounding landscape. During the nineteenth century, the Murray supported travel, trade and communication between isolated settlements. Euston became an important local service point as pastoral activity and river transport expanded through the region.
Euston Station played an important role in the area’s early development. The surviving 1848 homestead provides a physical connection to the pastoral era and the people who worked and lived along this section of the Murray River. It remains one of the community’s most significant historic places.
Agriculture continues to shape Euston and the surrounding district. Irrigation from the Murray supports vineyards, orchards, horticulture and broadacre farming. This productive landscape forms part of the wider Riverina and Sunraysia agricultural region, where access to water has transformed otherwise dry inland country.
