Goolwa (SA)
Goolwa is a historic river-port town on Ngarrindjeri Country at the southern end of South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula. Positioned near the final reaches of the Murray River, the Murray Mouth, Lake Alexandrina and the Coorong, Goolwa occupies one of the most environmentally and culturally significant waterways in Australia.
During the nineteenth century, Goolwa developed as an important inland port connecting river traffic with coastal transport. Paddle steamers carried wool, grain and other goods along the Murray-Darling river system, while the railway between Goolwa and Port Elliot provided a link between the river and the sea. Much of this history remains visible around the Goolwa Wharf Precinct.
The river continues to shape the town’s identity. Cruises, paddling experiences, marinas, historic vessels and waterfront businesses provide different ways to explore the lower Murray. The nearby Goolwa Barrage forms part of the system separating the fresh water of the Lower Lakes from the tidal waters extending towards the Murray Mouth and Coorong.
Goolwa is also closely connected with the coast. Goolwa Beach and nearby Middleton Beach are known for surfing, walking, fishing and seasonal whale watching. The Encounter Bikeway links coastal communities through a shared trail used by cyclists and walkers.
This page also covers Middleton, Hindmarsh Island and Currency Creek. Middleton contributes surf culture, beaches, historic structures and local artisan businesses. Hindmarsh Island provides access to marinas, farm experiences, the barrage and views towards the Murray Mouth. Currency Creek adds vineyards, railway heritage, historic bridges and peaceful rural scenery.
Goolwa’s town centre combines heritage buildings with cafés, galleries, accommodation, visitor services and local businesses. Community organisations, museums and cultural spaces preserve the stories of the river port while new tourism and hospitality businesses continue to strengthen the destination.
ShowcasingOz TV will capture the people, businesses, waterways, coastal landscapes and heritage that define Goolwa and its surrounding communities. Our coverage will highlight the region’s river-port history, Ngarrindjeri culture, environmental importance, local attractions and connections between the Murray River, Coorong and Southern Ocean.
