Hahndorf (SA)
Hahndorf is a historic Adelaide Hills township on the traditional lands of the Peramangk and Kaurna peoples. Established by Lutheran migrants from Prussia in 1839, it is recognised as Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement and remains one of South Australia’s most visited regional destinations.
The town was named after Captain Dirk Meinertz Hahn, who assisted the first settlers during their journey to South Australia. Early families established farms, cottages, workshops and businesses along what became the town’s main street, creating a distinctive settlement pattern that remains visible today.
Hahndorf’s German heritage is reflected in its architecture, churches, museums, food traditions and family businesses. Historic stone and timber-framed buildings now contain restaurants, bakeries, galleries, shops and accommodation, giving the main street a character unlike any other regional centre in Australia.
The surrounding Adelaide Hills support vineyards, orchards, flower farms, dairies and specialist food producers. Cool-climate wineries, cellar doors, distilleries, breweries and artisan businesses have made the district an important destination for food, wine and regional produce.
This page also covers the nearby communities and landscapes most closely connected with Hahndorf, including Mount Barker, Littlehampton, Nairne, Balhannah, Oakbank, Echunga, Mylor, Aldgate, Bridgewater, Stirling, Summertown, Uraidla and selected sections of the Mount Lofty Ranges.
The region combines cultural attractions with wildlife sanctuaries, gardens, bushwalking areas, heritage railways, museums, historic hotels and adventure facilities. Its towns are connected by winding roads, productive valleys and elevated landscapes that change noticeably through the seasons.
ShowcasingOz TV will capture the people, businesses, heritage and landscapes that define Hahndorf and the surrounding Adelaide Hills. Our coverage will explore German settlement history, local food and wine, farming, arts, wildlife, historic townships and the small businesses that sustain the region’s visitor economy.
