Jeparit (VIC)
Jeparit is a small rural town in western Victoria, positioned beside the
Wimmera River near the southern edge of Lake Hindmarsh. The town sits
between the Wimmera and Southern Mallee landscapes, where broadacre
agriculture, waterways and expansive skies contribute to a distinctive
regional setting.
The Wimmera River flows through Jeparit before reaching Lake Hindmarsh,
creating an important environmental and recreational corridor. Riverfront
areas, walking routes and nearby lake environments connect the town with
a water system that has sustained people, wildlife and agricultural
communities for generations.
Jeparit stands on Wotjobaluk Country, and the Wimmera River and Lake
Hindmarsh hold continuing cultural importance for Traditional Owners.
These waterways form part of a much older cultural landscape containing
stories, travel routes, resources and places of significance.
European pastoral settlement and broadacre farming later influenced the
development of Jeparit. Wheat growing, grazing and livestock production
became central to the district’s economy, supported by transport,
machinery and local businesses serving farms throughout the surrounding
Wimmera Mallee.
The town is also recognised as the birthplace of Sir Robert Menzies,
Australia’s longest-serving prime minister. Jeparit commemorates this
connection through local displays and public spaces, adding a nationally
significant political story to the town’s rural history.
Jeparit’s heritage can be explored through its town centre and the
Wimmera Mallee Pioneer Museum, while Lake Hindmarsh provides a powerful
example of the region’s naturally variable waterways. The appearance of
the lake changes considerably according to rainfall and inflows, creating
very different experiences across wet and dry periods.
ShowcasingOz TV will capture the history, landscapes, businesses and
community stories that define Jeparit. Our coverage will highlight the
town’s agricultural heritage, its relationship with the Wimmera River and
Lake Hindmarsh, and its place within Victoria’s wider Wimmera Mallee.
