Laura is a historic rural town in South Australia’s Mid North and is commonly described as part of the Southern Flinders Ranges. Positioned beside the Rocky River on the Horrocks Highway, the town is surrounded by grain-growing country, low ranges, small farming communities and historic settlements.
The township was surveyed during the nineteenth century and developed as agriculture expanded through the district. Farming, local trade and transport shaped Laura’s early growth, while its position between Gladstone, Stone Hut and the ranges made it an important service point for surrounding properties.
Railway development strengthened Laura’s connection with other Mid North communities. The former line linked Gladstone with Laura before being extended farther north, allowing agricultural produce, supplies and passengers to move through the district more efficiently.
Laura retains a traditional country-town centre with historic buildings, local shops, eateries, community facilities and shaded public spaces. Visitors can explore the town on foot, learn about local stories through heritage material and follow cycling or walking routes into the surrounding countryside.
