McLaren Vale vineyards in South Australia

McLaren Vale (SA)

McLaren Vale is one of Australia’s best-known wine regions, situated between the southern Mount Lofty Ranges and the coastline of Gulf St Vincent. Centred around the township of McLaren Vale, the district combines vineyards, cellar doors, restaurants, orchards, historic settlements and coastal scenery.

Grape growing began in the district during the nineteenth century, making McLaren Vale one of South Australia’s oldest continuously producing wine regions. Its varied soils and Mediterranean climate support many grape varieties, with Shiraz and Grenache forming an especially important part of the region’s identity.

The area is home to internationally recognised producers as well as family-owned wineries, small-batch distilleries and emerging winemakers. Visitors can experience traditional cellar doors, contemporary architecture, vineyard restaurants, private tastings and experiences exploring the connection between local wine, food and land.

McLaren Vale’s appeal extends beyond wine. Almonds, olives, chocolate, fresh produce and other regional products contribute to a strong food culture supported by farm gates, markets, restaurants and long-established local businesses.

The nearby township of Willunga adds another layer of history and community life. Its courthouse and police station precinct, heritage streets, weekly farmers market and position beneath Willunga Hill help preserve the character of one of the region’s earliest settlements.

West of the vineyards, Moana, Maslin Beach, Aldinga and Port Willunga provide access to some of the Fleurieu Coast’s most distinctive beaches. Cliffs, reefs, historic jetty pylons, caves and broad sandy shorelines create a strong connection between McLaren Vale’s wine country and the coast.

To the north, Old Noarlunga and the Onkaparinga River mark the boundary between the wine region and metropolitan Adelaide. The river mouth, national park, historic township and surrounding walking routes provide opportunities to explore the natural and cultural landscape that frames McLaren Vale.
