Milang is a historic lakeside town on the western shore of Lake Alexandrina, approximately 80 kilometres south-east of Adelaide. Surrounded by farming country, wetlands and the broad waters of the Lower Lakes, the town combines an important transport and agricultural history with a relaxed waterfront atmosphere.
During the nineteenth century, Milang developed into a significant river and lake port. Paddle steamers and other vessels carried agricultural produce, supplies and passengers across Lake Alexandrina and through the connected Murray River system. Goods arriving at Milang were transferred between water, road and later rail transport for distribution throughout the surrounding district.
The town’s surviving jetty, historic hand crane and former railway precinct help preserve the story of this busy transport era. The Milang Railway Museum explores the railway line that once connected the town with Strathalbyn, while the restored Milang Lakeside Butter Factory reflects the importance of dairying and local food production.
Nearby Clayton Bay extends the area’s appeal with a peaceful foreshore, boating access, wetlands and birdlife. Its position beside the waterways linking Lake Alexandrina with the lower Murray system makes it a popular destination for fishing, paddling, boating and quiet waterfront recreation.
