Moulamein is a historic rural town in southern New South Wales, situated at the meeting of the Edward River and Billabong Creek. Recognised as the oldest town in the Riverina, it offers visitors an opportunity to explore the early pastoral, river-trading and settlement history of the region in a peaceful country setting.
Long before European settlement, the surrounding rivers, creeks and wetlands held deep cultural importance for the Wamba Wamba people. These waterways supported hunting, fishing, camping and ceremonial gatherings and continue to form an important part of the area’s cultural and natural landscape.
During the nineteenth century, Moulamein developed as an inland river port and service centre for the surrounding pastoral district. Paddle steamers transported wool, agricultural produce, passengers and supplies along the river system, connecting remote farming properties with larger markets and regional ports.
The town’s heritage can be explored through the Old Moulamein Wharf, former courthouse, Mooloomoon Shearing Shed and Moulamein Heritage Village. Moulamein Lake and the Edward River provide additional opportunities for walking, picnicking, fishing, birdwatching and enjoying the river red gum landscape.

Constructed in 1908, the wharf recalls the period when Moulamein operated as an important inland river port. Paddle steamers once transported wool, agricultural produce, passengers and supplies through the surrounding river system.
One of the largest recorded river red gums in the Riverina, with a circumference of approximately 11.6 metres. Located along the Moulamein River Walk, the tree is an important natural landmark and meeting place within a culturally significant landscape.
