Nhill (VIC)
Nhill is a welcoming country town in Victoria’s western Wimmera region, positioned approximately halfway between Melbourne and Adelaide on the Western Highway. The town provides an important service centre for the surrounding grain, livestock and agricultural districts while offering travellers a convenient place to stop, explore and recharge during the journey between the two capital cities.
The modern township developed during the late nineteenth century after the construction of Noske’s Flour Mill in 1879. Shops, accommodation and other community services soon followed, establishing Nhill as an important commercial centre for the surrounding farming district. Several historic buildings and streetscapes continue to reflect this early period of development.
Nhill also holds an important place in Australia’s aviation history. During the Second World War, the local Royal Australian Air Force base trained more than 10,000 personnel. This history is preserved at the Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre, where restored aircraft, displays, photographs and personal stories explain the role the town played in Australia’s wartime training program.
Another of the town’s distinctive visitor experiences is the Australian Pinball Museum. Its collection follows the development of pinball across multiple generations, bringing together historic machines, artwork, memorabilia and playable exhibits in an interactive local museum.
Outdoor spaces form an equally important part of Nhill’s character. Nhill Lake, the adjoining wetland reserve, the boardwalk and nearby parks provide opportunities for walking, birdwatching, fishing, picnicking and photography. Beyond the township, the landscapes of Little Desert National Park and surrounding nature reserves showcase the native vegetation, wildlife and broad horizons of western Victoria.
