Parndana (SA)
Parndana is a small rural township located near the centre of Kangaroo Island, approximately 40 kilometres west of Kingscote. Surrounded by farmland and native vegetation, the town provides important services for central and western Kangaroo Island while offering visitors a practical base from which to explore several parts of the island.
The township was established following the Second World War as part of the Kangaroo Island Soldier Settlement Scheme. Returned servicemen and their families were allocated land across the central and western parts of the island, where they cleared scrub, established farms and created new community facilities under demanding conditions.
Agriculture remains fundamental to Parndana’s identity. Sheep, cattle, cropping and other rural industries continue across the surrounding district, while the town provides shops, fuel, education, sporting facilities, accommodation and community services for local residents and travellers.
The Parndana Soldier Settler Museum preserves the experiences of the returned servicemen and families who built the post-war community. Its collection includes photographs, documents, machinery, household objects and personal stories that explain how the settlement scheme shaped modern Kangaroo Island.
Parndana’s central position also provides access to the island’s rugged north coast. Stokes Bay, King George Beach, Snelling Beach and Western River Cove combine sheltered swimming areas, rocky headlands, river mouths, dramatic roads and expansive views across Investigator Strait.
The district was significantly affected by the 2019–20 Kangaroo Island bushfires, which damaged farms, native vegetation, wildlife habitat and infrastructure. The recovery of the surrounding communities reflects the same cooperation and resilience that characterised Parndana’s original soldier-settlement period.

Constitution Hill – North Coast Road Lookout
Constitution Hill provides a dramatic elevated view along the winding North Coast Road towards Snelling Beach, Middle River and the surrounding hills. The descent is one of the most recognisable scenic approaches on Kangaroo Island’s north coast.
King George Beach
King George Beach is a secluded north-coast beach set within a rocky cove near the mouth of King George Creek. Its isolated setting, clear water and surrounding headlands make it a quiet destination for fishing, walking and coastal photography.

Stokes Bay Beach and Tunnel
Stokes Bay Beach is reached through a narrow natural passage between granite boulders. The passage opens onto a sheltered sandy beach where a rock pool provides protection from the stronger ocean conditions beyond.
Stokes Bay Bush Garden
Stokes Bay Bush Garden presents a diverse collection of native plants, including species found on Kangaroo Island and elsewhere across Australia. Its garden setting highlights banksias, grevilleas, orchids and other distinctive Australian flora.
Western River Cove
Western River Cove is a remote north-facing beach set beneath steep hills at the mouth of Western River. Reached by a winding coastal road, the cove provides a picnic area, beach access and habitat used by Kangaroo Island’s glossy black-cockatoos.
