Penneshaw (SA)
Penneshaw is a coastal township on the Dudley Peninsula at the eastern end of Kangaroo Island.
Overlooking Backstairs Passage, it is the island’s main passenger and vehicle ferry gateway and
the first Kangaroo Island community encountered by many visitors arriving from the mainland.
The town developed around Hog Bay, where its sheltered foreshore, jetty and maritime connections
remain central to local life. Frenchman’s Rock recalls the visit of Nicolas Baudin’s expedition in
1803, while the Penneshaw Maritime and Folk Museum preserves stories from the district’s seafaring,
agricultural and community history.
Penneshaw is also a practical base for exploring the wider Dudley Peninsula. The surrounding area
brings together beaches, conservation parks, coastal walking trails, lighthouses, wineries, local
produce and wildlife experiences, from Baudin Beach and Island Beach to Cape Willoughby and
Antechamber Bay.
With essential visitor services, accommodation, dining and easy access to both natural and cultural
attractions, Penneshaw offers more than an arrival point. It is a destination in its own right and a
strong starting point for discovering the eastern end of Kangaroo Island.
