McLellan Lookout
An elevated viewing point offering broad perspectives across Port Augusta, the Upper Spencer Gulf and the surrounding ranges and plains.
Port Augusta is a major regional city at the head of South Australia’s Spencer Gulf. Positioned where several of the country’s most important road and rail routes meet, it has long been known as the Crossroads of Australia and serves as a gateway to the Flinders Ranges, Eyre Peninsula and the state’s northern outback.
The city occupies the traditional lands of the Barngarla people and has developed around the sheltered waters of the Upper Spencer Gulf. Its location created an important meeting place between coastal, desert and mountain environments, while also supporting transport, pastoral, maritime and railway activity.
European settlement expanded during the nineteenth century when the port became an outlet for wool and other pastoral products from inland South Australia. Railway development later strengthened Port Augusta’s national importance, connecting the city with Adelaide, Western Australia, the Northern Territory and communities across the outback.
Port Augusta now provides major health, education, retail, transport and government services for communities spread across a vast area of northern South Australia. Its town centre and foreshore sit on the eastern side of the gulf, while Port Augusta West, Stirling North and surrounding residential and industrial areas form part of the wider city.
Visitors can explore the region’s natural environments at the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden, learn about outback travel and settlement at the Wadlata Outback Centre, discover local art and culture, and take in views across the gulf from several elevated lookouts.
Port Augusta’s accommodation, dining, shopping and visitor services make it a practical base for exploring the Upper Spencer Gulf. It is also an important stopping point for travellers continuing towards the Flinders Ranges, Eyre Peninsula, Far North, Nullarbor or central Australia.
Port Augusta’s attractions introduce visitors to the natural landscapes, Aboriginal culture, military history, creativity and outback stories that have shaped the city and surrounding region.
