Port Fairy is a historic coastal town at the mouth of the Moyne River in south-west Victoria. Known for its working harbour, nineteenth-century architecture, sandy beaches and strong maritime character, it is one of the most distinctive seaside communities along Victoria’s western coast.
The district has been home to the Eastern Maar people for thousands of years. Its rivers, wetlands, coastline and offshore waters continue to hold deep cultural significance and form part of a landscape shaped by longstanding connections between people and Country.
European commercial activity began during the early nineteenth century when whalers and sealers operated along the coast. The settlement that developed around the Moyne River was initially known as Belfast before being renamed Port Fairy. Fishing, shipping, agriculture and maritime trade all contributed to the town’s early growth.
Prosperity generated through maritime and agricultural industries led to the construction of stone cottages, churches, hotels, warehouses and substantial public buildings. Many remain standing, giving Port Fairy one of regional Victoria’s most complete collections of nineteenth-century architecture.
The Moyne River and harbour remain central to the town. Commercial fishing vessels, recreational boats and historic structures line the waterfront, while nearby Griffiths Island protects important wildlife habitat and provides access to the Port Fairy Lighthouse and sweeping Southern Ocean views.
Port Fairy has also developed a strong reputation for arts, food, music and community events. Galleries, restaurants, cafés, boutiques and heritage accommodation complement the town’s beaches, coastal walks and historic streetscapes.
