Portland is a historic coastal city on Victoria’s far south-west coast, overlooking the sheltered waters of Portland Bay. Recognised as the location of Victoria’s first permanent European settlement, the city combines maritime history, a working deep-water port, heritage architecture and access to some of the state’s most dramatic coastal scenery.
The Portland district forms part of the traditional Country of the Gunditjmara people, whose cultural connections with the coast, forests, wetlands and volcanic landscapes extend back thousands of years. These living connections remain fundamental to understanding the region.
European settlement began when Edward Henty arrived at Portland Bay in 1834. The sheltered harbour supported whaling, fishing, shipping and agricultural trade, while the surrounding district developed through pastoral activity. Portland’s position eventually supported major road, rail and port infrastructure.
The city retains an extensive collection of nineteenth-century buildings that reflect its early commercial and maritime importance. Portland’s town centre, foreshore and harbour precinct bring together civic buildings, former warehouses, hotels, museums and working waterfront facilities.
Portland remains an active commercial port and fishing centre. Large vessels, fishing boats and recreational craft share Portland Bay, while the foreshore provides walking areas, beaches, lookouts and opportunities to observe seals, dolphins and migrating whales.
Beyond the city, Cape Nelson and Cape Bridgewater reveal volcanic landscapes, high sea cliffs, windswept beaches and important wildlife habitat. Visitors can explore the lighthouse, blowholes, limestone formations commonly known as the Petrified Forest and one of mainland Australia’s largest fur seal colonies.
Portland also serves as a base for the Great South West Walk, which connects coastal, forest and river environments across the wider Discovery Coast. Its combination of history, industry, wildlife and natural scenery makes Portland one of Victoria’s most varied regional coastal destinations.
