Rabbit Flat is an exceptionally remote location on the Tanami Road in the Northern Territory, between Alice Springs and Halls Creek. Surrounded by the immense landscapes of the Tanami Desert, it is remembered as the location of one of Australia’s most isolated roadhouses.
Rabbit Flat was never a conventional town. Its identity developed around the Rabbit Flat Roadhouse, which Bruce and Jackie Farrands established in 1969. The business provided fuel, food, basic accommodation, mechanical assistance and conversation for travellers crossing a long and demanding inland route.
The site was selected partly because water was available from a well beside the former stock route between Alice Springs and Halls Creek. Rabbit Flat later became a weather observation location, adding another important function to this isolated desert outpost.
For more than four decades, the roadhouse became a recognised Tanami Road landmark. It supported local residents, mine workers, pastoral traffic and adventurous travellers attempting the lengthy crossing between the Northern Territory and Western Australia.
The Rabbit Flat Roadhouse ceased operating at the end of 2010. Fuel, meals, water, accommodation and other traveller services are no longer available at the site. Rabbit Flat should therefore be understood as a historic location, not an operating roadside stop.
Today, the location represents the isolation, endurance and self-reliance associated with travel through inland Australia. The surrounding desert, immense skies and long distances continue to make the wider Tanami region a remarkable, although demanding, part of the country.
Rabbit Flat Roadhouse is permanently closed. There is no public fuel, food, drinking water, accommodation or mechanical assistance available at Rabbit Flat. Tanami Road travellers must check current road conditions, calculate their fuel range carefully, carry substantial water and emergency supplies, and confirm any access or permit requirements before departing.
Rabbit Flat has no operating commercial visitor attraction. The Tanami Road journey is included to explain the remote travel experience and the preparation required to reach this historic location.

Rabbit Flat does not have any operating hotels, motels, caravan parks, B&Bs or other public visitor accommodation. The former roadhouse and its accommodation facilities are permanently closed.
Travellers must not plan to stay, refuel or obtain supplies at Rabbit Flat. There is no public accommodation, fuel, food, drinking water, mechanical assistance or booking facility at the location.
If a licensed hotel, motel, caravan park or B&B begins operating in the Rabbit Flat area, it may be considered for inclusion after its services, location and public booking availability have been verified.
