Robinvale beside the Murray River in Victoria

Robinvale (VIC)

Robinvale is a regional town on the southern bank of the Murray River in northwest Victoria. Surrounded by productive horticultural land and Mallee countryside, the town serves as an important agricultural, commercial and community centre for the surrounding district.

The area is part of the traditional Country of the Latje Latje people, whose connection with the Murray River and surrounding landscape extends across countless generations. The river continues to shape the environment, identity and daily life of the Robinvale district.

Robinvale was established during the 1920s and named in memory of Lieutenant George Robin Cuttle, who was killed during aerial combat near Villers-Bretonneux in France in 1918. This history led to Robinvale and Villers-Bretonneux establishing a formal twin-town relationship.

The town expanded considerably after the Second World War through the Robinvale Soldier Settlement Scheme. Returned servicemen and their families established irrigation properties, particularly for growing grapes and citrus, helping transform the district into a significant horticultural region.

Robinvale later became home to people from many different cultural backgrounds. Successive generations of migrants contributed to local agriculture, business and community life, giving the town a notably multicultural identity.

Visitors can explore Robinvale’s rural and settlement history, visit the historic Robinswood Homestead and spend time around the town centre and Murray River. The town also provides a convenient Victorian base for discovering this section of the Murray without shifting the focus to accommodation across the river in Euston.
