Roxby Downs is a modern outback town in South Australia’s Far North, approximately 560 kilometres north of Adelaide. Built among red sand dunes and expansive arid plains, the town provides residential, commercial and community services for the nearby Olympic Dam mining operation and the surrounding pastoral district.
The town lies on the traditional lands of the Kokatha people, whose cultural connection with this part of northern South Australia continues today. The surrounding country forms part of a much broader cultural landscape with enduring importance to Kokatha families and communities.
Roxby Downs was developed during the 1980s following the discovery and development of the Olympic Dam ore body. Unlike many Australian mining towns that grew gradually, Roxby Downs was purposefully planned with residential neighbourhoods, schools, sporting facilities, landscaped parks and a central commercial precinct.
Olympic Dam contains substantial copper, uranium, gold and silver resources and has played a major role in the development of Roxby Downs. Although the mine is central to the regional economy, it remains an operating industrial site and does not offer general public mine tours. Visitors can instead learn about its development through local displays and presentations.
Roxby Downs is also closely associated with arid-zone conservation. Arid Recovery operates a large fenced reserve near the town, protecting native wildlife and supporting research into the restoration of Australian desert ecosystems. Its conservation programs have helped restore populations of threatened native species within a predator-free environment.
Visitors can explore the Emu Walk, learn about Olympic Dam, experience the distinctive wildlife and landscapes of the region and gain an appreciation of contemporary life in a remote Australian community. Roxby Downs presents an unusual combination of town planning, mining history, scientific research, conservation and outback character.
