Angas River Soldiers Memorial Garden & Rotary Footbridge
A landscaped riverside garden with lawns, mature trees, memorial features and a pedestrian footbridge crossing the Angas River.
Strathalbyn is a historic country town on the Angas River, approximately 55 kilometres south-east of central Adelaide. Positioned between the Adelaide Hills, the Fleurieu Peninsula and Lake Alexandrina, the town is surrounded by productive farmland, vineyards and smaller rural communities including Finniss, Ashbourne and Langhorne Creek.
The town was established during the nineteenth century by Scottish settlers and developed as an agricultural and commercial centre for the surrounding district. Its name combines “strath”, referring to a broad river valley, with “Albyn”, an old name for Scotland. This Scottish influence can still be recognised through parts of Strathalbyn’s built heritage and early community history.
Strathalbyn is particularly known for its well-preserved historic streetscape. High Street contains antique dealers, art spaces and specialist businesses within a collection of heritage buildings, while churches, former commercial premises and civic structures reveal the town’s development across successive generations.
The Angas River Soldiers Memorial Garden forms one of the town’s most recognisable public spaces. Mature trees, lawns, gardens and pedestrian bridges create a peaceful riverside setting close to the town centre. Strathalbyn also has strong connections with motoring culture, regional art and local history through its museums, galleries and community organisations.
Nearby Langhorne Creek is one of South Australia’s established wine-producing districts. Its cellar doors, vineyards and historic rural buildings broaden the visitor experience available from Strathalbyn, while Cox Scrub Conservation Park protects an important area of native vegetation within the eastern Fleurieu Peninsula.
