Tilmouth Well (NT)

Tilmouth Well is a remote roadhouse and accommodation stop in Central Australia, located approximately 190 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs near the eastern end of the Tanami Road. Positioned on the edge of Napperby Station and the Tanami Desert, it provides essential services to travellers, pastoral operations and people moving between remote communities.

The site developed from a pastoral well and homestead into an important stopping point on one of Australia’s major remote inland routes. Water, fuel, food, accommodation and mechanical assistance are particularly valuable in this region, where settlements are widely separated and road conditions can change considerably with weather and seasonal traffic.

Tilmouth Well is closely associated with travel along the Tanami Road, historically known as the Tanami Track. The route extends through vast desert and pastoral landscapes towards the Western Australian border, connecting Central Australia with remote communities, mining operations and the Kimberley region.

Nearby Yuendumu is one of the Northern Territory’s largest remote Aboriginal communities and an important centre of Warlpiri culture. The community is home to Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation, which has supported artists, cultural practice and community initiatives since its establishment in 1985.

The surrounding environment is characterised by broad plains, low ranges, desert vegetation and immense skies. Long distances and limited services mean visitors need to prepare carefully, check road and weather conditions and carry adequate supplies before continuing farther along the Tanami Road.
