Tooleybuc (NSW)

Tooleybuc is a small Murray River town in south-western New South Wales, situated directly across the river from Victoria. Located approximately 45 kilometres north of Swan Hill, it serves surrounding farming districts and provides an important stopping point on the road between south-eastern Australia, western New South Wales and South Australia.

European settlement expanded through the district during the nineteenth century as pastoral activity and river transport developed along the Murray. Tooleybuc grew around the need for a reliable river crossing and services for residents, station workers and travellers moving between New South Wales and Victoria.

The Tooleybuc Bridge is the town’s most recognisable landmark. Its historic lift-span design allowed road traffic to cross the river while retaining the ability to open for river vessels. Together with the nearby bridge keeper’s cottage, it demonstrates the importance of transport and river navigation to the development of Murray River communities.

Irrigation transformed the surrounding country and supports a diverse agricultural economy that includes grain, livestock, fruit and wine production. Nearby communities such as Piangil, Manangatang, Wood Wood and Nyah each reflect different parts of the broader farming and river history shared across the New South Wales and Victorian border.

Tooleybuc’s riverside reserves, mature river red gums and open parkland provide places for walking, fishing, boating and quiet recreation. The town centre contains accommodation, hospitality venues and essential services, giving visitors a practical base from which to explore this section of the Murray River corridor.
