Bales Beach
A scenic south-coast beach near Seal Bay, backed by dunes and native vegetation and exposed to the changing conditions of the Southern Ocean.
Vivonne Bay is a small coastal settlement on the south coast of Kangaroo Island, approximately 60 kilometres south-west of Kingscote. Set between native bushland, the Harriet River and the Southern Ocean, the locality is known for its long curving beach, clear water, fishing jetty and relaxed, low-density character.
The bay’s sheltered eastern end is framed by Point Ellen, where the jetty extends into deeper water and provides a popular location for fishing and coastal views. The Harriet River reaches the sea near the settlement, adding calm-water scenery and opportunities for kayaking alongside the more exposed conditions found farther along the beach.
Vivonne Bay occupies a central position among several of Kangaroo Island’s best-known south-coast experiences. The dunes of Little Sahara lie nearby, while Seal Bay Conservation Park, Raptor Domain and Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park introduce visitors to the island’s landscapes and wildlife. Roads extending east and west also lead to quiet beaches, conservation areas and less-developed sections of coastline.
Despite its growing profile as a visitor destination, Vivonne Bay remains a small community rather than a conventional resort town. Services are limited, and the surrounding distances are substantial, making advance planning important for travellers using the bay as a base for exploring the island’s south coast.
ShowcasingOz TV will document Vivonne Bay’s coastal landscapes, outdoor activities, wildlife experiences and local character as part of its national filming journey. Following our visit, this page will be expanded with original photography, professionally produced video and additional information gathered on location.
Vivonne Bay and the surrounding south-coast district offer wildlife encounters, guided outdoor activities and access to Kangaroo Island’s remarkable dune landscapes.
