White Cliffs (NSW)

White Cliffs is a remote opal-mining town in far western New South Wales, approximately 95 kilometres north of Wilcannia. Set within an arid landscape of pale mullock heaps, low scrub and immense skies, the town offers one of Australia’s most distinctive outback experiences and a strong sense of the ingenuity required to live and work in an isolated desert environment.

The settlement developed after opal was discovered in the district during the late nineteenth century. Prospectors arrived in search of the valuable gemstone, and White Cliffs became Australia’s first major commercial opal field. Mining remains central to the town’s identity, with historic workings, local showrooms and guided underground experiences helping visitors understand both the rewards and hardships of life on the field.

White Cliffs is equally renowned for its underground homes and businesses. Residents carved rooms into the soft rock to escape extreme summer heat, creating naturally insulated spaces that maintain a comparatively stable temperature throughout the year. These dugouts are now among the town’s most recognisable features and provide an unusual insight into practical outback architecture.

The town also holds an important place in Australia’s renewable-energy story. The White Cliffs Solar Power Station was among the world’s earliest commercial solar thermal power stations, using sun-tracking dishes to generate electricity for the remote community. Together with local landmarks such as Bill O'Reilly Oval and the surrounding national-park landscapes, it adds another layer to White Cliffs’ story of adaptation and innovation.
