White Cliffs (NSW)
White Cliffs is one of Australia’s most unique outback towns,
famous for its **underground homes**, opal mining history and
dramatic lunar-like landscapes. As the country’s first
commercial opal field, White Cliffs has a long history of
prospecting, hardship and incredible outback resilience.
Many locals still live in “dugouts” — underground houses built to
stay cool in the intense heat — giving the town a charm unlike
anywhere else in Australia. The surrounding opal fields and
stark desert scenery create a landscape filled with character
and adventure.
With quirky buildings, mining tours, friendly locals and stunning
sunsets, White Cliffs is a stand-out destination in far western
New South Wales.
ShowcasingOz TV will be capturing its underground lifestyle,
opal stories, and raw outback beauty during our 2026 filming
journey.
